A Charles Richison Design

Each design is specific to a client’s desire. One of the common questions is, “Do you have a certain style?”  My style is to exceed your expectations; through the design process, upon completion of your landscaping, and five or ten years down the road. As water conservation becomes more important, it is important for a landscape architect or designer to be knowledgeable and proactive in their approach to planting and irrigation design.

My ‘style’ is to design with drought resistant or drought tolerant plants, especially in full sun applications. My plans specify using a mulch that doesn’t dissolve or blow away over time, which ensures that the soil can better retain the moisture that permeates into it. Water efficient irrigation controllers and higher quality irrigation components are continually improving and can be operated from your smart phone.

Throughout a project, I will spend at least 25% of the time working directly with you. I sit down with you at the initial meeting and listen to your goals and objectives. We do a walk-through of your yard as well. Once I am hired, I come back to measure the design space, obtain rough grade changes, take photographs, look at view lines and sun angles. I also call the local jurisdiction to find out required setbacks for arbors, barbecues, fireplaces, etc. Following this, I draw two concepts, showing alternative layouts of the space. We sit down together to review the two plans; discussing positives and negatives to each design. I also provide a rough construction cost so we can determine where the conceptual design falls in your budget. I am not a contractor, but I work with a few reputable local landscape contractors to stay up to date on installed material pricing. From these two designs, we then assemble the ideas we like into a third concept for your approval. Next, I will sit down with you to review plant selections and finalize material selection. Upon completion and handing the plans over, you are ready to get competitive bids from landscape contractors and your dream yard is one step away.
